Finding Historical Images
- ArtStorThe ARTstor Digital Library, a non-profit resource, consists of images in art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences. This content is now hosted fully on the JSTOR platform but still provides much of the same functionality available on the previous stand-alone platform.
- Getty Institute Open Images SearchThe Getty makes available, without charge, all available digital images to which the Getty holds the rights or that are in the public domain to be used for any purpose. No permission is required.
- NYPL Digital GalleryOver 700,000 images from the NY Public Library's image collection.
- Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Online Catalog"The Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) contains catalog records and digital images representing a rich cross-section of still pictures held by the Prints & Photographs Division and other units of the Library. The Library of Congress offers broad public access to these materials as a contribution to education and scholarship. The catalog provides access through group or item records to about 65% of the Division's holdings. About 90% of the records are accompanied by one or more digital images. In some collections, only thumbnail images display to those searching outside the Library of Congress because of potential rights considerations. The primary historical documents described and displayed in this catalog may contain materials offensive to some readers. The Library does not endorse views expressed in the collections but presents the collections as an aid to scholarly research."
