ENG 444/544 British Women Writers: Using the Library & Library Web Site
Requesting Books from Other Libraries
If the item you’re looking for isn’t available at the PSU Library, you might see a Request from Other Libraries option that will allow you to request a physical copy or, if it's a book, a PDF of an individual chapter.
- First, sign in to the catalog to enable the request function;
- If the item is not available from our library, you can click the Request button for the physical copy or chapter PDF under Request from Other Libraries;
- The system will automatically prioritize fastest delivery;
- When your request has been filled, you will be notified by PSU email.
Take the book store approach - browse the stacks
While MANY search engines are available to you, sometimes the best way to find books and chapters on your topic is to walk through the Library stacks. Works by and criticism about English and American authors have call numbers that start with PR and PS respectively. Call numbers that begin with P are shelved on the 4th floor of the PSU Millar Library.
If you would like to get an idea of where in the stacks you should be looking for books by and about a certain author, look up their name in the catalog and limit to print books. You'll get a call number that will get you to the point in the stacks where you want to be.
Angela Carter - PR6053 .A73
Jean Rhys - PR6035 .H96
Zadie Smith - PR6069.M59
Jeanette Winterson - PR6073.I558
Virginia Woolf - PR6045 .O72
If you'd like to get a sense of how the call numbers for literature are organized, here is a link to the Library of Congress Classification Outline for British and American literatures. As mentioned above British literature is outlined in the PR's and American in the PS's.
