Find Books Using Subject Headings and Call Numbers

Subject Headings
Subject headings allow you to search library catalogs for materials on a particular topic. Often subject heading searching can be more productive than searching by simple keywords. Listed here are some major subject headings of interest for research in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Copies of the complete set of the Library of Congress Subject Headings are available at the reference desk in the library.

Civil Engineering
Earthquake Engineering
Environmental Engineering
Environmental Geotechnology
Highway Engineering
Human Engineering
Life Support Systems
Military Engineering
Public Works
Transportation Engineering
Water-supply Engineering

Call Numbers
Browsing the library shelves by call number ranges is another strategy for locating information on a topic; call numbers can help you get to the "right neighborhood" in the library stacks.

PSU Library Catalog - Books

Results include both print and ebooks, available from Portland State Library and the Summit Libraries.

Finding Books

Search Portland State Library's catalog for books, journals, videos, government information, music and other material owned by the Library. You may search by keywords, author, title or subject headings.

Remember, too, that you are not just limited to what we own in our Library. If you cannot find what you need in the our catalog or of the Orbis Cascade Alliance (Summit), then you can request them through Interlibrary Loan.

Requesting Books from Summit

When you find an item in the catalog that has a Find & Request link, then the book or video is checked out or not in our collection.

  • First, sign in to the catalog for borrowing privileges at Summit;
  • You can request the book by clicking on Find & Request, then select Request from Summit (a partnership of academic libraries in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho);
  • It takes approximately five days to receive an item through Summit;
  • When your item is available for check out at the 1st floor Circulation Desk, you will be notified by PSU email.

Request Books through ILL

If a book you need is not available either through PSU or Summit, you can request it (mostly) for free through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). It can take up to 12 days to receive a book through Interlibrary Loan.

The PSU Library does not order textbooks through Interlibrary Loan.
