UNST What are Great Books?: Annotated Bibliography

What does an annotation do?

An annotation of an article, book, or other material includes three things:

  • summary of a work;
  • Assessment of the relevance of  the work;
  • Reflection on the work.

Abstracts are summaries written by the author of the work, annotations will be written by you. Annotated bibliographies have a specific format depending on the style you are using (for your assignment either APA or MLA). They include a citation, and brief text summarizing the article, critically evaluating its relevance to your topic, and reflecting on the work. To see samples of annotated bibliographies, visit the links on this page, or explore the resources for APA and MLA in the Cite Your Sources library guide.
